Why the mules matter.

For many years, my father sat beneath a picture of two mules with the words “America’s Working Class” across the top. As a boy—and later as a man—I often wondered why that picture held such an important place behind his chair.

The answer was in the life he lived. My father spent his working years in a factory, surrounded by machines that were hard, cold, and unforgiving. He sacrificed for his family, took pride in honest work, and kept moving forward because the work mattered and people depended on him.

Like mules pulling a plow through hard ground, that effort creates something that can sustain others. To me, those two mules came to represent my father, America’s working class, and the values of pride, discipline, perseverance, compassion, equality, and responsibility.

Muleskinner Labs is a tribute to my father—and to everyone who keeps moving through hard ground so their families and communities can benefit from what they build.
